Definitely Spring

It's definitely spring here at our house--wanna know how I know? Critter count, baby.

Jeff and I live with our own version of Dr. Doolittle. If there is an animal within a mile of Gracen, it will find her or she will find it. And odds are, she will give it a name--read on.

This chipmunk visited our window box the other morning. Cute little thing, right?

It (and its family of roughly 50 members) live under our back porch. Holes. Many, many holes.

But it is so cute and it's name is Chipper. He has brothers Chip and Dale.

I know. Only in my world!

These 4 baby birds live (thankfully) in our neighbor's yard. But as Gracen has made herself known to the neighbors as the resident animal lover, they all call her when any animals visit their homes.

So far, there are no names yet bestowed. I am waiting.

This is an ordinary, albeit very pretty, caterpillar right?

Oh, how mistaken you are!

This is "Gillian--with G not a J, Mom". Gillian with a G has taken up residence (not that she had a whole lot of choice) in the butterfly house that Gracen built and painted.

We are waiting to see what Gillian with a G may turn out to be.

And finally...our neighbor's dog was barking in a most unusual manner yesterday afternoon. Gracen looked out the window, bolted through the living room on her way outside, yelling, "There's a turtle in our backyard!"

Well, after all, where else would he go?

The turtle was quickly put in a box for observation and, you guessed it, named Terry.

Fortunately, the turtle was released after research revealed it was in all probability a snapping turtle.

You would think we live in the woods. We don't. We are just blessed this way.

Our child is known through the neighborhood as the "little girl who rides the purple bike all over the place" and as "the little girl with the duck in her front yard."

I hope that when she looks back on her childhood, she will have fond memories.

I know I will.

She and all her critters make my heart happy.

Except the duck who really, really needs a more appropriate home!

I love all of the little critters! My daughter misses being able to find all those different types of wildlife around the yard.

Love the animals!!!

My guess for the caterpillar is that it is a Forest Tent Caterpillar. We have some that look just like it in our house right now. If I'm correct, they will turn into moths and therefore will build a cocoon instead of a chrysalis.

Thanks, Tina! We will be watching.
