I recently overheard someone say that their 14 month old went to a Gymboree type class and loved playing with the balls. She said that she had never thought of giving her child a ball.
This struck me as odd and also made me wonder what are the top toys that every child should have at some point during their early years (0-5).
My list:
1) Balls, different sizes
2) Wooden blocks
3) Paint, play dough, crayons, scissors (age appropriate, of course)
4) Something soft to love--animal, soft baby, etc.
5) Bowls and spoons
6) Musical instruments (empty oatmeal containers, pots and pans--something to beat on!)
7) Puzzles
8) Candy Land/Hi Ho Cherry-O or some other simple game
9) Some kind of riding toy and a tricycle
10) A Fisher Price Little People set--I'm partial to these because my Granddaddy gave me the little blue A frame house with the wooden people one year for Christmas. That house provided hours of imaginative play for me, my sister, and my cousins. Gracen has it now and still plays with it.
So, what about you? What are some toys that you think every child should have?
**Good books go without saying! A top ten of great kids' books will have to follow this, I think!**

Hooray for your list!!!!! Not an electronic gizmo in the bunch, just wonderful toys to stimulate a youngster's imagination and promote good, wholesome active play.
KUDOS
I wholeheartedly agree with everything on your list. I would add a roll of duct tape and boxes of all different sizes. Our problem her is duct tape is SO expensive so we end up hiding it from our son who would apply it to everything if he had the chance.
