In Which My Child Starts School

My girl started school on Monday. She hauled carried her brand new backpack on which her name was elegantly stitched. It was filled with necessary first day of school supplies: pens, pencils, notebook paper, etc. and crucial items in the life of an 11 year old girl: hairbrush and lip gloss. It was also packed with the one item her mother insists she never leaves home without--hand sanitizer. She put it in, albeit with a roll of eyes.

She also carried her matching lunchbox and water bottle. The world is a much prettier place when everything matches. We still have hopes that Jeff will not forever see dollar signs when he spies said matching items.

She walked into school, met her friends, organized her desk and cubby, and went in for morning meeting before beginning her day.

I did not cry. Much.

I cleaned the house top to bottom. I got reminded by the four legged family members that I must feed them lunch. (I got reminded about this when Gracen came home and asked had I fed them.) Oops....

I picked up Gracen and heard all about her day and enjoyed every. single. syllable.

We did it again Tuesday. I had an out of town appointment. I remembered to give the dogs lunch after they rounded me up cornered me at the door. They'll probably be carrying signs soon.

Today, I got the coveted, "Mom you rocked my lunch box" award. It is amazing how blueberry muffins for snack, mac and cheese and strawberries with powdered sugar for lunch can garner such praise. Funny the sandwiches the previous two days didn't get the praise.

I took her to school. The house is cleaned and I have no appointment today. So I wonder what to do with my time!

I have a list a mile long of things I have put off, things I want to learn, ways to be more involved and plugged in at the school, the church, and in the community.

But first I am going to enjoy letting Gracen stretch her wings. I am going to enjoy hearing about her days. Hopefully, I'll get to enjoy a lunch with a certain man I know and love.

It's a new chapter in life.

Glad you're managing okay with the change, Dana! I have to admit I was pretty teary eyed. I realized it's the first day of school for Melody's last year of high school and the first day of school for Kristen's last year of middle school. Life is certainly about change, isn't it?

So glad that everything is going well. I think you should take a day and have a Jane Austen marathon. You deserve a day of pampering.
