Since Gracen was about 4, we have had this tooth fairy box. Its hinges don't work anymore, the bow is crinkled, and she has lost a bit of her luster.
Still every time Gracen loses a tooth--and I do mean lose--it goes into the box. She waits until the tooth falls out. I took her in for a cleaning a month or so ago and the dentist told me that she had 2 teeth that should have already been sneezed out!
Back to the box. She puts the tooth into the box and then hides the box somewhere. (The tooth fairy, bless her heart, didn't think to watch where the box was being hidden the first few times this happened and had to resort to sticking the money on the fridge with a magnet. She learned.)
So for the past 6 years, teeth have fallen out, been placed in the box, hidden, and the tooth fairy shelled out the dough.
Yesterday was different. Gracen's tooth (one of the loose ones from aforementioned dental visit) was beginning to bother her. She decided to pull it.
The poor tooth had apparently been hanging by a thread (albeit a strong one) and had gotten weak, I suppose. It came out in pieces. I told her that that it was probably not a good idea to put the pieces in the tooth fairy box. It was not a pretty sight.
I found this note under the tooth fairy box.
"Dear Tooth Fairy,
I lost a tooth today and normally I would put it my box but...I left it in way too long. So it kinda fell apart (trust me I really did lose one). I would never give such a tooth to such a sophisticated fairy. Because it fell apart you do not have to give me a cent.
Forever yours,
Gracen
P.S. I have been working on my cursive.
The tooth fairy laughed, then cried at yet one more example of the little girl growing up--and left way more money than the tooth was worth.
