On Saturday, we went to the Moundville Native American Festival for a bit. We got there in time to catch the Birds of Prey demonstration and it was great. There were owls, a falcon, a vulture (appreciate the job they do but definitely not my favorite) and this eagle.
The eagle lost its wing 19 years ago. Something about this bird resonated with me. Kindred amputee spirits?! I was so hoping to get a good picture. Because of the sun, I wasn't able to see the screen on my camera so I had no idea what kind of picture I had gotten.
I love this picture--in fact it is now the profile picture on my Facebook page.
Here's my list of 10 things I love about this picture.
1) This bird is trying, struggling to do what he was created to do--fly and soar.
2) His lack of wing and lack of flight doesn't diminish his majesty and beauty.
3) There is still much strength here--look at the beak and the talons.
4) I'm reminded of freedom--and its cost--when I look at this.
5) I love that you can see a bit of the tether that holds him securely to his handler--the person who cares for him and meets his needs.
6) Honestly, I'm a sucker for black and white photos!
7) On a personal level, I'm reminded of a beautiful day shared with my family.
8) I was reminded (again, it seems I need this reminder a lot) to be thankful for the struggle, the pain, and the "tethers" that all too often come with being an amputee.
9) I love that in the color version you can see so many details and different colors. I am amazed by the creativity that God put into His creation.
10) We actually got to go behind the scenes after the show and talk with the trainers. I was able to get some really up close pictures of the eagle while he was in his cage.
I had to delete those.
He wasn't meant to be caged--or at least photographed there. (It was a very neat experience to see him that close though.)

That is beautiful, Dana. I love the parallels you were able to draw to your life and to the spiritual lives of other believers...we're tethered to the One who cares for our every need...we're crippled in some sense by sin, but still beautiful, strong, and created to soar...
Love this. Thank you for sharing. I hope you're having a good Monday!
Dana, that was just beautiful. Wow.
Beautiful picture, Dana. Beautiful post too!
