Book Review

I recently read Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God by Sheila Walsh.

Publisher's Description:

Delivering a big message with strong biblical insights and heartening personal stories, author and Women of Faith speaker Sheila Walsh shows women the life-changing power of trusting in God.

Most Christian women live with a deep sense that they can't seem to get things right, that if only they could be a little better, life would straighten out. Through her own personal hardships, Sheila Walsh has learned that the Christian life is not about getting things right or back to "normal." She writes, "Christ comes not to get us out of our difficulties but to live in us through them." She wants to show women that God has a stunningly beautiful moment of redemption for them that leads to a lifetime of peace and joy.

In this eye-opening message for women, she presents a moving look at her own story as she dives into the lives of Bible characters, drawing out lessons from their trials that women can use immediately to establish a deep, life-altering trust in the Father.

My Review:

Each chapter begins with a personal story and then goes into the life of a Bible character, using events from that character's life to support the chapter's main idea. While I did find some of Sheila's personal story interesting, this book overall wasn't an easy read for me. The writing was somewhat disjointed and hard to follow.

The struggle that is described in the book is a struggle to trust. This is certainly a struggle that many (perhaps particularly women) face. While the book does an adequate job of highlighting some Biblical characters, I'm not sure that the author really ties those characters to real "take away points"regarding trust.

Overall, I don't think that this book is one I would recommend based on writing style. While the author's personal story is interesting, she does address this (as she states several times through this book) in other books she has written.

Thanks for the review! The publisher's review makes it sound so perfect (guess that's why they got paid). I have read other books in which the author repeatedly mentions other books they have written. It REALLY annoys me! If they've already discussed it in a previous book, why do they feel the need to write a new one?
