Blog About OBU!

I attended Ouachita Baptist University--a small liberal arts university in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, from 1987-1990.

I knew from almost the time college was being seriously talked about that OBU was the place I wanted to go. It was the only college that I visited--I think it may have actually been the only one I applied to!

Truthfully, I'm not even quite sure why that was the only place I wanted to go.

I have some theories though...

The summer I was diagnosed with cancer and had my amputation, our youth director was a young man from OBU. We all loved him. He was actually our youth/music director for a few summers. I know that, because of him, OBU was high in my thoughts.

Many years before, our church had a pastor who left for the foreign mission field. His oldest daughter was at OBU a year before me and the younger daughter I had plans to room together when we went to OBU.

I could hardly wait! We hadn't seen each other in a while and I was looking forward to all the fun things we would do together.

We lived on the smallest floor of Flippen-Perrin Hall. Amy and I did have some good times. It wasn't perfect and there is much that I wish I had handled with more grace--oh, to have 40 year old wisdom at 18!

OBU was a great place for me in so many ways. It was a safe environment for me to stretch my wings a little but still be protected. I needed that. I needed the challenge of quality classes in a small setting.

I didn't graduate from OBU. After my junior year, I made the difficult decision to transfer to the University of Alabama. Culture shock reigned that first year! I longed to go back to OBU.

I did make it through and graduated from UA but OBU will always be "my" college. It was the place that in so many ways prepared me for life. God used those times at OBU to build a foundation that kept me (fairly!) grounded and sane during the tougher times at UA.

OBU is truly a special place--one that holds many fond memories!
